RelaxationResponsePositive

As a long-time practitioner and advocate of prayer, mediation and yoga, I’m intregued by the research being done on these “relaxation-response techniques” at prominent universities world-wide. One such study was recently done at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and published in the Harvard Gazette where I read about it this morning. According to the article, this study proves that activities producing a physiologic state of deep rest not only greatly relieve stress and anxiety, but can reduce the need for health care services by a whopping 43%!

Also, something I found particularly fascinating: the study’s authors note that stress-related illnesses, such as anxiety and depression, are the third-highest causes of health expenditures in the United States after heart disease and cancer – which are also greatly affected by stress! All the more reason to integrate peaceful practices into our everyday lives.
